Hallo allemaal! Ik heet Marleen. Hi everybody! I’m Marleen.
Welcome to DutchPod101.com’s “Nederlands in 3 minuten”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Dutch.
Let’s take a closer we learned the numbers from one to ten. Have you forgotten? Here, I'll tell you again-
Één, twee, drie, vier, vijf, zes, zeven, acht, negen, tien!
And now let’s continue from eleven.
Elf.
[slowly] elf.
Twaalf.
[slowly] twaalf.
Dertien.
[slowly] dertien.
Veertien.
[slowly] veertien.
Vijftien.
[slowly] vijftien.
Zestien.
[slowly] zestien.
Zeventien.
[slowly] zeventien.
Achttien.
[slowly] achttien.
Negentien.
[slowly] negentien.
And finally we have:
Twintig
[slowly] twintig.
Okay, now repeat after me. I'll say the numbers and give you time to repeat each one.
elf
twaalf
dertien
veertien
vijftien
zestien
zeventien
achttien
negentien
twintig
These numbers may seem harder to remember, but a lot of them are just the single number you learned from the last lesson, with tien added to the end. The rest you will have to memorize.
Let’s not stop at 20! Counting to one hundred is super easy! Now I'll give you the tens-
30. dertig
40. veertig
50. vijftig
60. zestig
70. zeventig
80. tachtig
90. negentig
100. honderd
While you have to memorize a few of these numbers, there are a couple of tricks that will make memorizing incredibly easy! Notice that all the numbers except honderd consist of a number from 3 to 9, or a variation of it, followed by -tig.
For example vijftig, which means “fifty”.
[slowly] vijftig
It is composed of vijf, which means “five” and -tig.
vijftig
Here’s another example.
veertig, which means “forty”.
[slowly] veertig
...is composed of veer which is a variation of vier, the word for “four”, and -tig
veertig
As for honderd, it sounds a lot like the English “hundred” and shouldn’t be that hard to remember.
How do you form compound numbers above twenty in Dutch? This is also quite easy to do!
All you need is the tens, the numbers you want to add, and the Dutch word for “and”, en.
Let’s try it out.
Let’s say the word for “fifty-six” step-by-step. "Fifty" is vijftig, “six” is zes, and finally you need en, “and”, to combine them - Zesenvijftig.
[slowly] zes-en-vijftig.
But be careful! As you can see, instead of placing the number behind the tens as in English, you place the number in front of the ten. So zesenvijftig can be literally translated as “six and fifty”.
After only two lessons, you are now able to count to one hundred in Dutch!
In the next lesson we’re going to put your number knowledge to use! Do you have all the skills you need to go shopping in the Netherlands? If not, I'll be waiting for you in our next Nederlands in 3 minuten lesson.
Tot ziens!!
