| What is our focus of this lesson, Jacob ? |
| Jacob: ...in this lesson, we will talk about the Dutch alphabet |
| Mies: Yes, often people start with learning the alphabet, but we figured a toddler learns how to speak first, and then studies the alphabet. |
| Jacob: I remember that, yes. |
| Mies: So yeah.. we figured you have been with us for a while, so it's time for the alphabet! |
| Jacob: Yes, it is very useful when you know how to pronounce the alphabet letters. |
| Mies: You will be often asked to spell your name. |
| Jacob: Yes, or if you want to learn a new word and someone tells you how to write it down. |
| Mies: No doubt we should study this. |
| Jacob: There is gonna be quite a bit of listen and repeat in this lesson… |
| Mies: I'm up for that, how about you? |
| Jacob: Sure, let's do it! |
| Mies: Let's start with the vowels. They can be a bit confusing if you are thinking of English spelling, let's just say them quickly once first. I will say English, and you will say the Dutch Jacob. |

| Jacob: A (Dutch) |
| Mies: E (English) |
| Jacob: E (Dutch) |
| Mies: I (English) |
| Jacob: I (Dutch) |
| Mies: O (English) |
| Jacob: O (Dutch) |
| Mies: U (English) |
| Jacob: U (Dutch) |
| Mies: So yes the A, E, I can be confusing because in Dutch it is |
| Jacob: A-E-I |
| Mies: Yes, this is just a matter of remembering and trying to think in Dutch when you are spelling. Sometimes I really feel I have different brains: an English one and a Dutch one and I just have to switch over. |
| Jacob: Haha I see. How do all those brains fit into that little head of yours?! |
| Mies: Very funny…ok lets move to some consonants. B, C, D, G, J, P,T, V in Dutch would be: |
| Jacob: B-C-D-G-J-P-T-V |
| Mies: right so you just have to replace the ‘EE” sound with an “ ay” sound. Once more please. |
| Jacob: B-C-D-G-J-P-T-V |
| Mies: Not too hard, right? |
| Jacob: No, I'm with you. |
| Mies : Okay, next are F, L,M,N,R,S and note there will be only one letter that is different. Jacob? |
| Jacob: F-L-M-N-R-S |
| Mies: Did you notice which one was different? |
| Jacob: No, sorry I didn’t pick up on that one. |
| Mies: Okay, I will say the English one and you will say the Dutch. 'F' |
| Jacob: F |
| Mies: 'L' |
| Jacob: L |
| Mies: 'M' |
| Jacob: M |
| Mies: 'N' |
| Jacob: N |
| Mies: 'R' |
| Jacob: R…….. Ah now I see. AR and ER |
| Mies: We are making a lot of progress here! Let's have a look at the letters H and K |
| Jacob: H-K |
| Mies: Yes there is a long AA sound after the letter. Once again: |
| Jacob: H-K |
| Mies : Okay, now I am gonna single out some letters. The letter Q |
| Jacob: Q |
| Mies: yes we just leave out the Y sound that you hear in English |
| Jacob: Q |
| Mies: The W |
| Jacob: W |
| Mies: so the W is different from English. It sounds like you are giving directions. |
| Jacob: You have to go that way! |
| Mies : The letter Y |
| Jacob: I just realized that sounds like you are asking a question Y |
| Mies: Well I am asking you to say it in Dutch! |
| Jacob: Y |
| Mies: Now let's get to a letter we hardly ever see in Dutch, the X |
| Jacob: X |
| Mies: So the sound changes from “e” to “i” |
| Jacob: X |
| Mies: And that brings us to the last letter, which is a present for you: the letter Z |
| Jacob: Z |
| Mies: Yeah the same as in British-English! |
| Jacob: Wow that went pretty fast. |
| Mies: Yeah and just like in English, some of the letters may sound similar when you say them. |
| Jacob: Like M and N? |
| Mies: Indeed it can be hard to distinguish the difference. |
| Jacob. Any advice here, teacher Mies? |
| Mies: Sure! When you spell, use a place or country name everyone knows the spelling of. |
| Jacob: Yes, like the M from Moscow |
| Mies : Or the N from Nederland |
| Jacob: yes that is how we say The Netherlands in Dutch. |

| Jacob: Okay, I am up for that. |

| Mies: Very good, now just keep practicing! |
| Jacob: Okay, that just about does it for this lesson. |
