Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in the Netherlands Series at DutchPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Dutch holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 24, Amsterdam Gay Pride. In Dutch, it's called [Amsterdam Gay Pride].
The Amsterdam Gay Pride parade was initiated in 1996 and has been held annually on the first weekend of August in downtown Amsterdam ever since.
In this lesson, you’ll learn about the cheeriest and most colorful party in all of the Netherlands!
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question?
What are the colors, or [kleuren] in Dutch, of the gay pride flag?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
During Gay Pride, the feeling of pride is palpable. Thousands of people who take pride in their sexual identity flock to the streets to take part in the event. It is possible for them to do so because in the Netherlands, particularly in Amsterdam, respect for others’ socio-cultural background is considered very important. This mentality also explains why Amsterdam Gay Pride is one of the most well-attended public events in the Netherlands.
Gay Pride takes place each year in Amsterdam, the city of beautiful canals. These canals are used extensively during the Canal Parade, which is the highlight of Amsterdam’s Gay Pride celebrations. A colorful array of boats cruise through the canals, or [grachten] in Dutch, from Western Dock to Eastern Dock.
In addition to the popular boat parade, there are several street parties held on Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon in the popular gay, or in Dutch [homo], districts of Amsterdam. In the multicultural society that defines the Netherlands today, there is a deep respect for people’s individual beliefs and opinions. The freedoms of one person are not impacted by the freedoms of another. This explains why everyone is able to so effortlessly band together in support of this fantastic and fun event, or [evenement], each year.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
What are the colors, or [kleuren] in Dutch, of the gay pride flag?
The Gay Pride flag consists of the colors of the rainbow, or [regenboog] and consists of six equally wide stripes. As well as being a symbol for the gay movement, this flag is also waved in support of the peace movement.
What did you think of this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?
Does your country also have a special day celebrating the gay community?
