Lesson focus

The bus is an important means of transportation. Usually, we use buses to cover both long and short distances. However, before starting your trip, you probably need to buy a OV-chipkaart or "public transport chip card."
The OV-chipkaart is a national ticketing scheme for public transportation. You can use it on the bus, tram, train, and metro. You may purchase an anonymous, OV-chipkaart for your trips within the city at supermarkets or bookstores. Please note that this card does not contain any initial travel credit.
The cards are also available at ticket machines at train stations and at service desks from OV companies (public transport companies) such as Connexxion, GVB, or U-OV. Bear in mind that, if you want to buy a personal OV-chipkaart that is registered in your name, your only option is to buy one online. You can either pay with iDEAL or Paypal.
Now let's teach you how to buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart. If you're traveling within one city, you will say Een OV-chipkaart alstublieft, meaning, "A public transport chip card, please."
Let's break down this phrase. We have alstublieft, which means "please," which has come up several times before, and we have OV-chipkaart, or "public transport chip card."
Let's break it down by syllable: O-V-chip-kaart. Een means, "one." All together, we have Een OV-chipkaart alstublieft. "A public transport chip card, please."
You need to make sure that you charge your OV-chipkaart with travel credit before you start traveling. You can charge both personal and anonymous cards online, in supermarkets and shops, at OV service desks, at train stations and in some buses. If you choose to charge your card in person at an OV service desk, you can say: Ik wil graag mijn OV-chipkaart opladen alstublieft "I would like to charge my public transport chip card, please."
Let's break down this phrase. First, we have Ik wil, which means "I would," then the word graag "like." After that comes mijn "my," OV-chipkaart "public transport chip card" and opladen "charge"—and finally alstublieft "please."
Let's break it down by syllable: Ik wil graag mijn O-V-chip-kaart op-la-den al-stu-blieft.
All together, we have Ik wil graag mijn OV-chipkaart opladen alstublieft "I would like to charge my public transport chip card, please."
Let's imagine you are in Haarlem and you want to go to Zandvoort, a small town close to Haarlem. Zandvoort is well known for its beach, which is popular among tourists. After you find the bus that goes in the direction of Zandvoort, you will check in with your OV-chipkaart on the card reader when you enter the bus. Once you leave the bus, you check out with your OV-chipkaart on the card reader.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so good luck, that also means “good luck” in Dutch.
