The verb in that particular sentence is not "gaan ( to go)" but "heengaan ( to leave for)". It's split up so leaving "heen" out of the sentence would make it incomplete.

why in the sample sentence of "vriend" "heen' is used can't we just use "ga" by itself? and what does even "heen" mean?
