| Chigusa: Okay, so what is the 2-minute rule? |
| Peter: So the way the 2-minute rule goes is… if you want to build a new habit, like learning a language, it should only take 2 minutes to do. And this is an idea from the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear. |
| Chigusa: Hmm, but why only 2 minutes? I’d think you’d need to put in a LOT more time… If you want to learn a language. |
| Peter: In the grand scheme of things, you’re right. But you can’t really put in more time if you’re not used to learning a language in the first place, right? |
| Chigusa: That IS true… |
| Peter: So the 2-minute rule is all about showing up. If you can put in 2 minutes a day, you’re mastering the skill of showing up… which is the cornerstone of any successful routine. |
| Chigusa: And after the 2 minutes are up? |
| Peter: After those 2 minutes, you’re done; just walk away. But at some point… you’re going to want to do more. That 2 minutes will turn into 10, 20, and 30 minutes… and that’ll guide you to fluency. |
| Chigusa: I see. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. It’s kind of like jogging. First, maybe you’ll start with a walk around the block. And if you stick with that… you’ll eventually want to jog and go a bit further…. And maybe even do a marathon later. |
| Peter: Marathon, that's something to build towards. Exactly. But it all starts with that easy, super-simple first step. Just show up and do 2 minutes. So again, this is a great tactic for beginners and anyone that has trouble sticking with learning. |
